You know what they say - the grass is always greener on the other side. Curly-haired gals are always looking for ways to go straight, and straight-haired girls are always looking to add body, curl and wave. Do you suffer from flat, lifeless strands? Don't worry - there's hope! And you don't need to spend hours in a salon waiting for a perm to set. This isn't 1980, it's 2011, and these days, it's easier than ever to get the huge, bouncy curls seen on Hollywood starlets and magazine covers.

Girls who don't have the big bouncy curls they dream of need not stress - it's actually easier than you think to get the curls you're looking for, whether you want small corkscrew curls a la Taylor Swift or larger waves a la Lauren Conrad. Even if your hair is flat, you can make it curly! And it only takes a few steps. First, prime your hair with some sort of heat protectant product. Lauren Conrad advocates for Moroccan Oil, which smells incredible, and adds nutrients back into your hair, contributing moisture and shine. It's important to protect your hair before you curl it, as any heat-producing iron will singe the hair cuticle slightly. Also, make sure your hair is 100% dry before you curl it - you'll damage it even more if you attempt to use heat on wet strands.

Curling irons are similar to many of the other beauty products you probably already have in your arsenal - it's helpful to have more than one to get the different looks you're hoping to achieve. For instance, the tight corkscrew curls you're looking for are best achieved with a smaller iron; larger barreled irons will produce less tight curls, and give you the beachy wave look favored by Hollywood celebrities. Curling irons come in tons of different varieties - there are barrel style, tapered, clip-less, interchangeable barrel, coil and spiral stylers, stylers made from iron and titanium - the options are positively endless! Do you need each and every one? Probably not - but you will benefit from having, at the very least, a few different sized barrels in your closet, so that you can easily create the looks you're dreaming of.

A good curling iron (the kind that won't burn your hair) will be made of solid ceramic material that delivers constant high heat. You're looking for something that can get as hot as 400 degrees, and gold titanium barrels allow you to get that sort of heat and lock in curls without stressing out or damaging your strands. A good iron will also come with multiple heat settings; thinner, more flat hair doesn't need quite as much heat, whereas thick, unruly hair might need it turned up all the way.

If you're looking to create a curly updo with lots of volume, start with a tiny 5/8 inch barrel curling iron. Babyliss, a brand known for its curling irons, makes a great small option. This won't give you giant waves, but it will create tiny corkscrew curls. You can brush these out to add volume, or pile them up to create a sophisticated updo. These smaller barreled irons are used for weddings and other special occasions where updos are a necessity. They're also good for creating small, romantic curls - like those you see in fairy tales. Larger barreled irons simply won't produce those sort of curls, so don't waste your money on a larger barrel iron if you're looking for tight corkscrew curls.

These days, clampless curling irons are all the rage. These irons, which are much easier to use, given that there's less to juggle hand-wise, have been blowing up the blogosphere. Many say that clampless irons work even better than traditional irons. Because clampless irons don't leave a mark in your hair like traditional irons often can, they're said to produce much more natural results. Traditional irons often singe your hair, or create a mark where the clamp sits. With clampless irons, you don't get the problem - you just get natural looking curls that you'll love. However, because a clampless iron requires using your hands, you'll need to invest in a heat glove, which protects your fingers from burning as you hold your hair in place.

Another relatively new option is tapered curling irons. These also give a more natural look than a traditional iron, thanks to the fact that they get smaller at the end. Tapered irons allow for constant heat, curl after curl, and they help you form diverse, natural-looking curls with distinct curl patterns, for the gorgeous curls you've always dreamed of.

Are you a straight-haired lady who dreams of having big, bouncy curls? There's no reason you can't get the curls you're dreaming of. Simply invest in a great curling iron.
